About Gocardless.com Payment Method?
GoCardless is a service that enables businesses to collect payments from customers both domestically and internationally, through a global network of connected bank debit systems. It is a pull-based payment mechanism, putting businesses in control of collecting payments from their clients, rather than relying on them to send funds when payment is due.
There are two main methods to accept business payments online: credit (or debit) card payments and bank payments, such as Direct Debit and Instant Bank Pay. Online payments can be taken as bank payments - direct, automated transfers between two bank accounts - or via credit and debit cards through an all-in-one payment processor such as PayPal or Worldpay Online Payments.
Direct Debit is a flexible and highly cost-effective online payment option, equally suitable for one-off and recurring payments, both regular and irregular. As an automated ‘pull’ payment, the business benefits of Direct Debit include eliminating late payments, which reduces manual admin and improves cash flow.
To collect payments with GoCardless, businesses can create a free GoCardless account, access a user-friendly payments dashboard, connect their accounting software (if they use one), and easily set up & schedule one-off or recurring payments via payment pages on their website checkout or secure payment links. From then on, businesses can get paid on time, every time, as GoCardless automatically collects payment on the scheduled date.
For businesses that choose to collect online Direct Debit payments in-house, they’ll need to be able to call on significant resources to meet the extensive set-up requirements. Not only will they need their own SUN and to invest in Bacs-approved Bacstel-IP software, but they’ll also need to satisfy underwriting, revenue, and Know Your Client requirements. For SMEs, small businesses can access the benefits of Direct Debit without the prohibitive set-up requirements by using GoCardless. Historically Direct Debit has only been viable for large-scale enterprise businesses due to the burdensome financial and regulatory requirements.

Please note: You will only be able to create payments once your account is fully verified.
- Receive your funds. Once payment has been collected from your customer, those funds will then be paid out to you. You can only create and collect payments once your account has been verified, so starting this process as soon as possible is recommended.

How do I request a refund from GoCardless?
To request a refund from GoCardless, follow these steps:
- Payments collected via GoCardless can be refunded in full or partial amounts via the dashboard or API.
- The ability to process your own refunds is enabled on a case-by-case basis subject to meeting certain requirements. If you would like to have this feature enabled, please submit your request.
- Refunds are processed by GoCardless outside of the bank debit network. Once processed, a refund event will be shown as a debit in the report of the payout the payment was settled against.
- By default, refunds can only be actioned 7 days after the payment charge date. If you have opted out of this safety period, you will be able to process the refund on or after the payout date. Your customer will receive an automated notification when the refund is actioned.
- In most cases, funds will be received within one business day of the refund being actioned. On some occasions, it may take two business days.
- If a payment is refunded that has already been paid out to you, the amount of the refund will be settled against your next payments. The refund will be marked as a 'debit' within the payout it was settled against.
- For safety reasons, it is strongly recommended that payments are not refunded within 7 days of being charged. This allows sufficient time for the payment to be settled into your bank account, ensuring that it was successfully collected and protecting you from refunding unreceived funds. A 7-day refund restriction is imposed on payments by default, however, you may opt-out of this safety feature by contacting the support team.
